Grandmas... God’s gift to the world! Grandmas are truly something special and will forever hold a pivotal role in the foundation for so many families! Check Out this grandma that had me crying real tears...
Every grandma has her own language and although mine didn’t call us bxtches like the grandma in the featured video, she was funny as hell. My Grandma... Vessie aka Baby Sister was a mother of 13 that resided in Hollandale, Mississippi until her death! She was witty, direct, resourceful and took no shxt! I have quite a few memories with her but for now I’ll share jus one with u!
Rewinding back to me growing up in Peoria, Illinois. I was in high school and my grandma had come up north to visit! I remember getting ready for school one day and asked her for some lunch money. Everyone knows that grandparents spoil their grandkids so I figured she’d do me right! Y’all, this woman turned over her purse and I swear a pot of gold fell out! She literally gave me all her change and it was like over $10... Biiiiiiiiitch I was sooooo hype cause I knew I was gonna have the bomb ass lunch that day, cheese fries, pizza, soda, snacks... err thang!
Not only did she give me money but she also shared a message with me in that moment... she said “Whatever you do in life, just make sure you’re the best at it, if you’re gonna be a bum, then you betta be the best damn bum out there.”
*blank stare*
Ok wait a minute... Did my grandma jus call me a bum or did she forecast that I’d be a bum cause I asked her for money?
I was taken aback for a second because it sounded backhanded but then the message kicked in... “Be The Best at whatever you do.” and that’s a message I’ve carried with me throughout my entire life. I make sure that I’m memorable! I may not be the best at everything but I absolutely excel at whatever I put my mind to... WHATEVER! There’s nothing I can’t do and if I want to I’ll figure out how to and be GREAT at it... so I guess I am being my best so to say! Thanks G!
That was the last memory I remember sharing with my grandma before she passed, so the message has been clear ever since!
The first time I was ever called a Bxtch by a grandma was actually by my best friend Tamika’s Grandma Mattie! She was *and still is* soooooo hood and jus simply didn’t give AF! She never cared about what manners she did or didn’t have and was extremely unapologetic about it! I forgot why she called me a Bxtch but I remember looking at her like “Wait did she jus” then I looked at my best friend like “Gurl did she jus”... and my best friend looked at me like “Bxtch YES TF SHE JUS DID!”
Chiiiiiiiiile I was stuck for a second tryna process wtf was going on! I’m extremely big on respect but I didn’t feel disrespected, jus caught off guard! Grandmas don’t call their babies bxtches... or do they? Welp I learned quickly tho that they do... and everybody was a Bxtch to her, no matter the age, gender nor relation; all her kids, grandkids, their kids and errbody were bxtches... I already used the term as endearment with my friends etc... jus never had an adult call me one so boldly... and I was called one about 100 mo times by her after that! Hahahahaha!
Grandma Mattie was soooo much fun to be around tho cause you knew for a fact that she was gonna curse somebody out and that was always a sight to witness! I remember her throwing a flip flop at one of her grandsons and I swear ta god that flip flop turned the corner and popped him in the head... I swear y’all... like a boomerang or some shxt!
I can go on for days with stories but I’ll leave some for later! If you’re lucky enough to still have your grandma in your life and she’s not toxic, then cherish every moment and learn every single thing you can about her life growing up! Pick her brain and literally absorb all the knowledge you can... it’s rewarding and you’ll learn so much about your family’s history and even about yourself!
That day as Baby Sista sat in the back room of our house on 2221 N. Idaho is the day she implanted a gem that I would eventually learn about myself and never let go... I am The Best... not in a narcissistic praising myself type of way, but moreso along the lines of self motivating, understanding my capabilities and learning to love me for whoever I turned out to be! So to all y’all out there... BE THE BEST at whatever you do! #Godspeed
Thanks Grandma V! Rest In Heaven!️
